Saigawa Sunset 1

While standing on the same bridge as yesterdays picture, I turned the other way and took this three exposure HDR, while balancing my camera on the railing.

@Adam Ifans: Yeah, its not as 'in your face' as HDR can often be.

I remember being struck by the fact that there was lawn-style grass by the river. From the places I've lived (Nagoya, Okayama, Kanazawa, Osaka) it's the only place I've seen like that in Japan.

@Daroru: Yeah, I have found Kanazawa to be one of the most pleasantly livable cities I have seen in Japan. Too bad I'm off to Tokyo in a couple of months!

My first thoughts were, "Masterful exposure". Then I read the words "HDR". So... it is possible to do tasteful HDR. A lot of photographers are giving it a bad name, but you're certainly a master of it, and you've made me change my mind about it totally. Could you tell us briefly what your method is? Wonderful mood here, too.

By the way, although I never went to this place, it brings back memories for me of walking beside rivers in Japan a decade and a half ago when I lived there. Thanks for that.

@Andrew Gould: Yeah. I use Photomatix, of course, but after I assemble the image and process it in Photomatix, I often use Photoshop to 'undo' a bit of the more unrealistic bits. A quick 'auto levels' can sometimes (but not always) work wonders in keeping the range, but dispensing with the 'unreality' that can often come with HDR.
