This picture reminds me of a story my friend told me about the train service in his place in Japan. All passengers had to manually open the doors themselves. Quite a change compared to the usual automatic door service in Japan.

Just a guess, but do you know if that's narrow gauge railway?

@Walt: To my knowledge almost all of Japan's Non-Shinkansen lines are narrow gauge, so I would certainly assume the Hokutetsu lines are.
